England will begin the knockout stages of the Women’s World Cup with a highly anticipated showdown against Nigeria this morning.
The Lionesses finally seemed to have exploded into life at the tournament by thrashing China 6-1 to seal top spot in Group D.
The victory followed up successive unconvincing 1-0 victories over Haiti and Denmark that maintained England’s perfect record.
Opponents Nigeria scraped through in second in Group B with only one win and two draws against Canada and the Republic of Ireland.
But their only three points were gained with a stunning 3-2 win over co-hosts Australia and will provide a stern last-16 test.
