Saturday picks

Find the following picks for the races at Ascot and Wetherby on Saturday.

Ascot 1.30 – Passing Well

The Jamie Snowden trained PASSING WELL was all set to go at Cheltenham last weekend but the ground dried up too much, so instead he is rerouted to this assignment, where he looks to have major claims with underfoot conditions that will be much more in his favour.

The 6-year-old won two of his five starts over Hurdles last season since joining the yard. Both of those wins came on Soft ground, and he won first time out last season, so everything should be in place for a bold show on chase debut.

It is worth noting that his defeat in the Grade 1 Challow Novices’ Hurdle when finishing fourth was excellent form, as that race has worked out a treat.

Eased to a mark of 122 I like his chances over this trip on testing ground with Johnny Burke in the saddle where I think there should be plenty more to come as he embarks on a Chasing career.

Wetherby 1.50 – You Wear It Well

It could be a big afternoon for trainer Jamie Snowden, and his Cheltenham Festival winning Mare YOU WEAR IT WELL is back, and is my selection to win the Listed Mares’ Hurdle over 2m.

This looks a hot renewal, but I would be concerned about Luccia on very testing ground, and Kateira, whilst well suited by the terms of this race, represents the Dan Skelton yard who have been a little quiet as of late (only 8% strike-rate for the last fortnight).

You Wear It Well ran her rivals ragged when winning the Mares’ Novice at this year’s Cheltenham Festival, and imagine, coming back to 2m on her return will not be an issue on ground that will be hard work.

I imagine Grade 1 winning jockey Gavin Sheehan will press on early and try and expose the chinks in the armour of her rivals. It wouldn’t be a surprise if by the end of the season, all three Mares made it back to the Festival with chances. But for now, it’s You Wear It Well I am siding with what should be a belter.

Ascot 2.05 – Red Rookie

RED ROOKIE absolutely relishes testing ground, and can defy a mark of 140 with the mud flying at Ascot. The Emma Lavelle team have been in fine fettle recently, and this individual should love the conditions and arrives here with a strong chance.

The 8-year-old has five career wins to his name, with three of those coming on ground officially described as Heavy, and once on Soft. The gelding has a good record when fresh, and coming back to this extended 2m will be perfect for him, as I haven’t always been convinced that he can operate as well over further.

Thomas Bellamy is in the saddle, and the combination can really serve it up to their rivals in what looks like a cracking encounter.

Wetherby 2.25 – Thyme Hill

This looks a presetable opportunity for the 9-year-old THYME HILL to get back to winning ways. The gelding loves soft ground, has an excellent record when fresh, and should be much happier plying his trade over Hurdles once again this season – he never looked a natural Chaser.

He is a class act on his day, and represents the Philip Hobbs and Johnson White combination who really are in the groove at the moment.

The Somerset team are operating at a 33% strike-rate for the last two weeks, so their string are clearly in rude health. Thyme Hill was a Grade 1 horse in his pomp, and he can make that back class tell here.

Dashel Drasher has to be respected despite his advancing years, and the joker in the pack could be Ga Law, who reverts back to Hurdles and has a crack at 3m.

Wetherby 3.00 – Bravemansgame

It is hard to side against the class act that is BRAVEMANSGAME. Last season’s King George hero used this race 12 months ago as a stepping stone en route to Kempton glory, and connections have opted for this race once again.

Bravemansgame jumped and travelled superbly to get the job done in this encounter last season, and should take a lot of beating here with Harry Cobden on board the Paul Nicholls representative. Ahoy Senor would be a major player if bringing his A-game to the table, but seems to save his best for Aintree and the spring.

Midnight River has to take a big step forwards, which leaves Gentlemansgame for shrewd handler Mouse Morris.

The Irish raider has race fitness on his side and in receipt of weight looks to have a solid chance of following home the Ditcheat maestro’s runner.

Sunday picks

Get ready for the races at Huntingdon and Carlisle with the following picks.

Huntingdon 1.40 – Mofasa

With the benefit of a run under his belt already this season, the Paul Nicholls trained MOFASA looks the one to beat in the Novices’ Limited Handicap Chase over an extended 2m7f.

He was runner-up to Broadway Bob on stable and Chase debut at Worcester in September, and he should be a lot sharper for the outing, and have learnt a great deal from that experience.

That form in itself is pretty useful, as the victor chased home the excellent Flooring Porter at Cheltenham the other day.

There should be more to come from this unexposed 7-year-old who is versatile in regards to ground requirements, and eased to a mark of 130 he looks fairly well-treated on the pick of his Hurdling form.

I expect to see a different horse this time around and he can get the job done here.

Carlisle 2.30 – Bill Baxter

BILL BAXTER was an absolute revelation last season, with his swashbuckling style of jumping out of soft ground holding him in good stead.

He won 4 of his 6 starts over fences, improving 26lbs in the process, and the season culminated with victory in the Topham Chase at Aintree giving a marquee win for the Warren Greatrex team.

Bill Baxter often adopts front-running tactics in small fields, and his aggressive nature of attacking fences poses many questions of his rivals.

Up in class, he has a bit to find on official figures, but he should have everything in his favour here for a big run. James Bowen is back in the plate to ride him, and It would be far from a shock if he carried on improving this season.

Everything should be in place for a big run and the Lambourn representative could spring a minor upset here.
