Salisbury racing tips

3.20: Son 5/1 – 1pt

The Listed Race is among the feature races of the meeting offering up £22,684 to the winner.

The ground is set to be good and maybe even on the firm side with plenty of heat arriving across the UK getting great ground for many flat runners.

Son sets the standard with a mark of 99 but it’s Arabian Crown and Arabic Legend who are the joint-favourites.

Both lightly raced and thus without a mark yet and could make the most being well-weighted in this listed contest if they are in fact better on their second or third runs.

The Charlie Appleby-trained Godolphin colt has placed behind Starlore in early July before winning on soft ground at Sandown by two lengths. Shaping as though an extra furlong will definitely suit, especially being by Dubawi.

As is Arabic Legend though, in the colours of Sheikh Mohammed Obaid Al Maktoum, he beat Emperor’s Star, another Godolphin horse, in a maiden stakes contest last month.

That form alone is difficult to judge and it’s easier to side with the former with William Buick on board.

But Son did well to finish fifth just over two lengths behind Haatem in Group 2 company at Glorious Goodwood’s Vintage Stakes last time out and is a huge price considering he returns to firmer ground.

4.30: Caernarfon 10/3 – 1pt

But there’s a second listed race, the penultimate race of the day and arguably the highlight of not just the Salisbury meeting but for the most part of this week so far.

Running Lion trained by John & Thady Gosden is the big favourite, but only marginally, ahead of the higher rated Caernarfon, trained by Jack Channon.

Running Lion will be mounted again by Oisin Murphy, but the pair finished far back in France back in June when hanging left and weakening away from contention.

Clearly something amiss that day and is never straightforward, having also been withdrawn from the Oaks at Epsom earlier in the month for getting upset in the stalls.

When things go right though this filly is unbeatable, the grey has forged clear of Sumo Sam in a listed event at Newmarket prior, the same horse who ended up winning by over eight lengths in the Group 2 Langtry Stakes.

However, the bay filly set to be ridden by regular rider Connor Beasley looks more appealing, due to her consistency and ability to run in Group 1 company.

She placed not far off Al Husn and even closer to Soul Sister in the Oaks, where once again firmer ground may aid her slightly more.

Yarmouth racing tips

3.35: Skukuza 1/1 (NAP) – 2pts Anonymous Guest 40/1 each-way – 1pt

The Guest horses, owned by John Guest Racing are often underestimated and as such pay nice dividends.

This one may fly under the radar slightly but his fourth place in a Class 2 novice event at the start of this month was encouraging.

If he settles better and starts races swift enough he should be able to find himself among the front groupings once more.

That fourth was in a field of 12 and if sharper should present a nice challenge even if just for each-way money.

Mikkel Mortensen claiming 7lb is a huge help too, and helped ride the horse as a 150/1 outsider last time which still would have paid very well if backing extra places.

Skukuza placed narrowly behind Warm Spell last time out and that form was a solid one at odds-on for the winner, the short price now goes to the second place of that contest and for top-form yard Ed Dunlop.

P+L since 10/07/23: +49.72pts
