Spain v Sweden preview

Spain have progressed further in this World Cup than they have in any prior edition, and with that they also take the title of tournament favourites into the semi final.

Jorge Vilda’s side swept Group A winners Switzerland aside in their first knockout stage game last week, putting their 4-0 defeat to Japan in the final group game behind them with a stunning performance in a 5-1 win.

La Roja needed extra time to oust reigning runners up Netherlands in the quarter finals, conceding a 91st minute equaliser to cancel out Mariona Caldentey’s penalty, before Salma Paralluelo struck in the second half of extra time to send Spain through.

Sweden have already knocked out two of the most fancied sides in the competition this knockout stage and will fancy their chances at making it a hat trick by beating Spain on Tuesday morning.

Peter Gerhardsson’s side defeated the back-to-back defending champions and pre-tournament favourites USA in a dramatic penalty shootout in the Round of 16, before backing that up with a 2-1 victory over the highly fancied Japanese in the last eight.

It’s also worth pointing out that despite Spain being favourites for Tuesday’s semi final, they are winless against Sweden in 11 previous meetings against the Scandinavian nation, of which they have lost seven.

Their last meeting ended in a 1-1 draw in Cordoba in October last year.

Spain v Sweden betting tips

Both sides’ quarter final matches went to extra time last Friday and it wouldn’t be a huge surprise for the extra 30 minutes to be needed again – BetVictor have boosted the odds for a 1-1 draw after normal time up to 6/1.

Alternatively, odds have also been boosted for a Spain win in 90 minutes with both teams to score up to 5/1, which looks a reasonable price.
