Ascot racing tips

It’s the Shergar Cup at Ascot on Saturday featuring the top jockeys from Europe, Rest Of The World, Great Britain and Ireland and a Ladies team.

Shergar Cup teams

  • Europe – Frankie Dettori (c); Bauyrzhan Murzabayev, Olivier Peslier.
  • Ladies – Hayley Turner (c); Hollie Doyle; Saffie Osborne.
  • Rest Of The World – Vincent Ho (c); Joao Moreira; Kazuo Yokoyama.
  • GB & Ireland – Luke Morris (c); Tom Marquand; Declan McDonogh.

2.10: Zoffee 10/3 – 1pt & The Very Man 15/2 each-way – 1pt

Relatively unexposed on the flat and comes here in good form for trainer Mrs John Harrington.

Has only raced on the flat in Ireland and makes an interesting debut under Hollie Doyle, who always does well in handicap contests.

Placed just half a length second out of 20 at Galway at the end of last month and faces a 4lb rise for that, but looks like there could be more to offer.

Zoffee also arrives in fair form having gone close in the Ascot Stakes at Royal Ascot in June.

Soft ground is ideal for both but they can be versatile on good ground too.

2.45: Max Mayhem 11/1 each-way – 1pt

Pride Of Priory won this last year and gets a big boost with Frankie Dettori on board, while his trainer William Haggas is in top form recently.

But that was on good to firm ground and he will potentially need that to get the better of these rivals this time, which doesn’t look possible with the forecast.

Scampi is another who probably wants better ground and if they get it, could be one to side with under Saffie Osborne.

But for now, with soft ground confirmed currently and more rain on the way the top-rated Max Mayhem could bounce back to victory under Bauyrzhan Murzabayev.

At Royal Ascot finished just 31/4l behind Okita Soushi and then followed up nicely with a second place just 3/4l behind City Streak, again at Ascot.

4.30: Alpha Capture 25/1 each-way – 0.5pt

Certainly worth siding against Quinalt who goes without his usual 5lb claimer on board this time, and also has to contend with a steep 7lb rise, taking that to a total of 38lb so far this season after six straight victories.

Alpha Capture has huge potential after two poorer runs this season at Newmarket, but drops down in the weights to a very handy mark.

In fact, he was 8l behind Quinalt in the bet365 handicap, while carrying 15lb more than the serial winner.

Now though, Quinalt will be carrying 7lb more with a huge switch in the weights, and back on softer ground will suit the Haggas-trained horse who gets Kazuo Yokoyama on board.

Curragh racing tips

3.25: Shartash 9/2 each-way – 1pt

Shartash is still improving as a three-year-old and ought to go even better after going well in the Group 3 at Newbury last time out behind Commanche Falls.

These two meet again here only Commanche Falls has to win again with 2lb extra on this youngster.

Regular rider Ben Coen is back on board and looks very interesting at this decent price.

4.40: Bucanero Fuerte 3/1 – 2pt (NAP)

This is a great renewal of the Phoenix Stakes (Group 1) for two-year-olds.

Kevin Stott comes over to Ireland for this one ride and it’s no surprise why as this colt placed just a length off of River Tiber at Royal Ascot’s Coventry Stakes. That form has been boosted constantly and he proved it was no fluke when winning by a short head over this course and distance at the start of July.

Highest in the ratings and gets a solid price after this great form.

Newmarket racing tips

3.40: Soprano 10/3 – 1pt

Upped to 7f last time out and it looked as though there’s a lot of promise there.

She finished just two lengths behind Porta Fortuna at Royal Ascot, who is going for the Group 1 Phoenix Stakes at the Curragh under Oisin Murphy.

This is a much weaker Group 3 in comparison and should justify being amongst the favourites.

P+L since 10/07/23: +53.62pts
