Manchester United signed the defender from Leicester in the summer of 2019 for a fee of around £80 million, which is still the world record transfer fee for a defender.

The 30-year-old enjoyed great success in his first couple of years at Old Trafford and was given the captain’s armband within six months of his arrival in Manchester and became one of Gareth Southgate’s first choice England defenders.

The last couple of seasons have proved more difficult for Maguire in the red of Manchester United and currently finds himself as the fourth choice centre back following the arrivals of World Cup winning duo Raphael Varane and Lisandro Martinez.

Maguire, with two years remaining on his contract, could be on his way out of the club in order to find more game time and keep his name in the frame for England selection, and West Ham could be the team to take him in.

The defender has also had the captain’s armband taken off him by Erik ten Hag ahead of the new season, further increasing the chances of him finding a new club this summer.

Favourites West Ham have to just come into a large sum of money having sold their club captain and star player Declan Rice to Arsenal for around £105million.

David Moyes will be looking to make a few new signings with that money in a bid to improve on last season’s Premier League campaign in which they were in a relegation battle for a lot of the season before finishing 14th.

The Irons’ victory in last season’s Europa Conference League final also means they will be taking part in the Europa League next season, so more strength and depth in the squad will be required for the East London side to compete in all competitions.

West Ham are a tad light in the centre back department with one of their four first teamers, Angelo Ogbonna, being 35-years-old and with just a year remaining on his contract.

Everton are also in the race to sign the Manchester United defender, with Sean Dyche looking to sure up his side’s defence ahead of the new season, with the club having narrowly escaped relegation in each of the last two years.

The Toffees have five senior centre backs in their ranks currently but four of them (all bar fellow England international James Tarkowski) will only have a year remaining on their contract at the end of the current season.

A proposed move to Italy has also been rumoured for the England international, currently priced at 10/1 to join any Serie A club, with the likes of AC Milan, Inter Milan and Juventus deemed to be interested.

A move to either of the Milan sides will ensure that Maguire will be playing Champions League football next season, a competition which both sides did well in last time out, with Inter finishing as narrowly beaten finalists, knocking their city rivals out in the semi finals.

Tottenham had previously been favourites to sign the England international this summer, but their odds have lengthened marginally from 6/4 to 20/1 in recent weeks.

This summer transfer window is likely to be a busy one in north London with a new manager at Tottenham and a need for drastic improvement next season following their eighth place finish in the league.

Many of Spurs’ current centre backs are very close to reaching the end of their current contracts, meaning new boss Ange Postecoglou could well be in the market for someone new to fill the role, and Maguire’s experience, leadership and ability could prove very useful.

Clement Lenglet’s loan from Barcelona at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium expires at the end of the month, while Eric Dier and Davinson Sanchez both only have a year remaining on their current deal.

This leaves just Cristian Romero and an out of favour Japhet Tanganga as their only first team centre backs with more than a year left on their contract.

Newcastle are also in the hunt for a host of new players having qualified for next season’s Champions League for the first time since 2003.

Eddie Howe will be looking to build a squad strong enough and deep enough to challenge for trophies across all competitions next season and is likely to be heavily backed in the transfer market to do so.

The Magpies are priced at 25/1 to make a move for the 30-year-old.

Chelsea and Liverpool have also been given odds of 25/1 to sign the England international, with the same odds given to potential moves to Ligue 1 or La Liga.

Aston Villa have also been rumoured to be interested in Maguire, though their odds of signing the defender have lengthened to 33/1.

Unai Emery led the Villans to a surprise seventh place finish last season which means Villa Park will host European football for the first time since 2010 next season.

The Spaniard has been in the market to improve the strength and depth of his squad and Maguire could fit the role perfectly with his vast experience of European football.

Maguire has also previously formed a good partnership with Tyrone Mings in defence with England, though Villa have already signed Pau Torres from Villarreal which will likely fill that gap for them.

Brighton and boyhood club Sheffield United are also in the betting market to sign the defender at 33/1.
