The west Londoners finished 12th in the top-flight after a disastrous last campaign but hopes have been reignited by the arrival of Pochettino.

Jurgen Klopp will not have been pleased with his side last season either, with the Reds performing below their usual standards.

A fifth-placed finish meant they disappointingly missed out on a Champions League spot.

However, after a pre-season filled with goals, Klopp’s men look to be back firing and will be aiming to challenge at the top of the table once again.

Chelsea vs Liverpool: Team news

Chelsea will be without new signing Christopher Nkunku after he suffered an injury during pre-season.

Nkunku is set to have surgery on his knee after suffering meniscus damage, meaning he will likely be sidelined for a considerable amount of time.

Fellow new arrival Nicolas Jackson is expected to lead the line while returning loanee Levi Colwill may start at centre-back.

Benoit Badiashile and Noni Madueke are both recovering from knocks with the former unlikely to feature for the first few games of the season.

As for Liverpool, their search for a defensive midfielder continues, with Alexis Mac Allister featuring in a deeper role in their final pre-season friendly.

Mohamed Salah, Diogo Jota, Luis, Diaz, Cody Gakpo and Darwin Nunez are all competing for attacking positions, leaving Klopp with a selection headache.

Thiago and Stefan Bajetic are the only two Reds players who are struggling for fitness for the season opener.

Chelsea vs Liverpool: What has been said?

Speaking during pre-season, new boss Pochettino looked ahead to his side’s opener against Liverpool.

He said: “We are in a good way; we are building something special I think.

“It’s a process and we need time, but in football, you cannot ask for time. You need to deliver from now.

“We know we are Chelsea and even if young players are involved against Liverpool, the mentality is to win.

Chelsea vs Liverpool: Match facts

  • Mohamed Salah has scored in Liverpool’s opening Premier League game in all six of his seasons with the Reds. His eight MD1 goals in total is a joint record in the competition.
  • None of the last 10 managers whose first Premier League game in charge of a club came against Liverpool have won (D4 L6), since Craig Shakespeare’s Leicester beat the Reds 3-1 in February 2017.
  • This will be Mauricio Pochettino’s first Premier League game in charge of Chelsea. The Argentine has won five of his previous seven MD1 games in the competition (D1 L1), with the only defeat coming at Manchester United in 2015-16.
  • Liverpool are unbeaten in their last 11 Premier League games (W7 D4), the longest current run without a defeat for any side in the competition. This run started with a 0-0 draw at Chelsea, which is the only time they’ve failed to score in these 11 matches.
  • Apart from the three teams to be relegated at the end of 2022-23, Chelsea have picked up fewer wins (4) and fewer points (20) so far in 2023 than any other Premier League side.
  • Liverpool haven’t lost their opening Premier League game in any of the last 10 seasons (W8 D2), since a 3-0 loss at West Bromwich Albion in 2012-13 under Brendan Rodgers.
  • No team has won more of their opening games to a Premier League campaign than Chelsea (20), with the Blues picking up more points than any other side on MD1 (66).
  • This is just the second time Chelsea and Liverpool are facing in their opening game of a Premier League season, with the Blues winning 2-1 at Anfield in 2003-04 previously.
  • Each of the last four meetings between Chelsea and Liverpool in all competitions has finished 0-0 – no fixture in competitive English football history has finished goalless five times in a row before.
  • Each of the last six meetings between Chelsea and Liverpool in all competitions have been drawn – it’s Liverpool’s longest run of consecutive draws against an opponent, while only against West Brom (1922-1927) and Norwich (1974-1978, including three Anglo Scottish Cup meetings) have the Blues drawn seven in a row.
