Both teams will be looking to start the season well after disappointing campaigns last time out.

Chelsea suffered their lowest league finish since 1994, ending up in 12th place after a turbulent season which included four different managers and over £500m spent on transfers.

Former Tottenham and PSG manager Mauricio Pochettino has been appointed the man to turn the tide at the West London club, and has spent around £180m on transfers to aid his cause.

A mass overhaul has taken place at Stamford Bridge this summer with nine first team squad members exiting the club this window, accruing around £220m in the process.

The Blues won three of their pre-season friendlies in preparation for the new campaign, drawing the other two.

Liverpool also underachieved last season, having been two matches away from winning the quadruple the season before, the Reds ended up finishing fifth in the Premier League last time out, their lowest finish since 2016.

Jurgen Klopp’s side only reached the fourth round of each of the domestic cups they’d won the previous season and were eliminated from the Champions League in the first knockout roud.

There has also been a large exodus of players at Anfield, with several first teamers, including five central midfielders, leaving the club.

The Reds have made two signings this summer in the form of Alexis Mac Allister and Dominik Szoboszlai, and are expected to sign at least one more player before the transfer window slams shut next month.

Liverpool also played in five pre-season friendlies in preparation for the new season, in which they won three, drew one, and feel to one defeat – 4-3 to Bayern Munich.

The last six meetings between Chelsea and Liverpool have all ended in stalemates, with the last four all finishing goalless.

Pochettino has only won one of his 11 meetings with Klopp, with the German winning all of the last four matches.
